2018 Secretariat Application

Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisers, Alumni, and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join the secretariat of the sixth session of the Montreal United Nations Conference (MUNC) to be hosted from November 16-18, 2018.

Last year, we organized our largest conference to date welcoming 500+ international participants to Montreal. MUNC emphasizes the spirit of collaboration at its conference with the aim of encouraging participants to develop workable solutions to the world’s most complex issues. Students role-play as delegates representing the Member States of the United Nations. Through their lively debates and exchanges, delegates experience the dynamics of international cooperation. Secretariat members play a key role in crafting these experiences.

Our conference organizer Dawson College will be celebrating its 50th anniversary as an academic leader in the upcoming school year. This historic occasion provides an opportunity for next year’s conference to highlight the values and commitments that continue to define the delegate experience at MUNC.

MUNC is noteworthy for featuring committees in a Blue Division for secondary school and college students in addition to an Orange Division for university students. Each division is tailored to the knowledge and experience of the participant. The conference champions authenticity and realism, simulating committees that capture the spirit and work of the United Nations.

We encourage all interested applicants to complete the secretariat application form by January 21, 2018 at 11:59 PM EST. We will contact short-listed candidates to conduct interviews.

The available positions are:

  • Secretary-General;
  • Under-Secretary-General for Administration;
  • Under-Secretary-General for Committees;
  • Under-Secretary-General for Delegate Relations; and,
  • Under-Secretary-General for Media.

MUNC has a rich tradition of featuring a multicultural and diverse group of staff members. Last year’s staff of 80+ students included representation from Carleton University, Champlain College, Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, Concordia University, Dawson College, École Polytechnique de Montréal, HEC Montréal, John Abbott College, Marianopolis College, McGill University, Texas A&M University, Université de Montréal, University of Ottawa, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Université de Sherbrooke and Vanier College.

The secretariat is responsible for planning the conference and its members are devoted to ensuring the conference exceeds the high bar set by previous editions. Secretariat members will create and execute a vision for their portfolios. Some of their responsibilities will therefore include attending weekly secretariat meetings, reviewing and improving last year’s conference materials, promoting team bonding, and managing their MUNC email accounts. At the conference, secretariat members will help run registration and assist with running delegate services. Secretariat members will be expected to pass on the spirit of MUNC to both staff and delegates. While each secretariat member will have individual tasks, the secretariat is a closely-knit group and will often share tasks, lending a hand to one another as the conference approaches.

Joining the secretariat is a serious commitment and requires organization, flexibility, and time management skills on the part of the individual. Participating individuals who are ready and willing to take on the challenge of organizing MUNC will come to the realization that the efforts made are all the worthwhile and rewarding. MUNC combines the exciting thrills of political simulation with extensive educational opportunities for all its participants.

We look forward to working with you.

With encouragement,

Jonathan Sasson
